Having a more beautiful smile can change your life. In fact, an attractive smile is often associated with increased self-confidence and success in life. Fortunately, achieving the best smile of your life is easy at Baldwin Distinctive Dentistry. Dr. Kevin Baldwin offers veneers in North Las Vegas, NV for perfectly white, straight teeth.
What Is a Veneer?
This product, also known as a dental laminate, guarantees a flawless smile and works by attaching thin pieces of porcelain to the front of the tooth. These “shells” are custom designed to cover the tooth and mask any imperfections. The procedure is irreversible- each shell is cemented to the tooth with dental cement.
Benefits of Porcelain Laminates:
Laminates are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the dental field. This is because the procedure is the most effective, versatile way to dramatically improve your smile’s appearance.
Some of the benefits include:
- Increased self confidence
- Porcelain is extremely natural looking because it contains the same light reflecting properties as a natural tooth
- It’s a stain resistant material
- Porcelain works well with gum tissue and will not aggravate the gums
- The shells are cemented into place and are very stable. The procedure is irreversible.
- The shells are customizable- the patient has complete control in the final appearance of their smile
How are They Used?
This procedure is used to hide a wide variety of dental flaws including:
- Stained teeth- however, if you plan on undergoing whitening treatment, complete it before this procedure is begun.
- Misaligned teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Broken teeth
- Wide gaps between teeth
- Unattractive teeth
What Does the Procedure Involve?
The process of takes about 2 appointments and may require some follow-up care. The first part of the process involves a consultation with Dr. Baldwin during which you will be able to get very specific about the final appearance of your smile, creating the look by choosing color and size.
Usually during this same appointment, Dr. Baldwin will numb the area around the teeth that you are improving and then remove a very small portion of the tooth enamel. This ensures that the new cover fits smoothly over the natural tooth without too much of a “bulky” look.
Once the enamel is removed, Dr. Baldwin makes a mold of the newly shaped tooth and sends the mold to the laboratory. The lab uses this model to create your custom designed porcelain dental works. Because it takes anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks for the lab to send the final product to our office, we create a temporary set of porcelain shells that will protect your teeth.
Once the permanent set of laminates arrives, Dr. Baldwin and you can inspect them for approval and he can make small last minute changes before permanently cementing them to the front of your natural teeth. After this appointment, you can enjoy a dramatically enhanced smile!
Does It Hurt?
This process is relatively painless. Even though removing the enamel is not painful, Dr. Baldwin occasionally uses anesthesia to help calm patients. If you experience discomfort after the procedure it will usually disappear within 3 days and taking aspirin or Tylenol should help.
How Much Does It Cost?
The cost for a dental veneer treatment in North Las Vegas depends on how many you are getting, what type you are getting, which teeth are being covered, etc. Typically, the price ranges anywhere from $800-$2000/tooth. Unfortunately, insurance does not usually cover cosmetic procedures. Contact your provider to be sure, however.
Do They Require Special Care?
These laminates are very easy to care for. They should be treated just like normal teeth when it comes to oral hygiene. Brush and floss your teeth daily. Always use a non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid scratches.
While porcelain resists staining, it is still important to avoid dark foods and drinks as well as teeth-staining habits such as smoking. This will ensure that your smile stays whiter longer.
Also, avoid applying extreme pressure on your teeth such as biting into hard, sticky foods, chewing fingernails, clenching or grinding your teeth or chewing on ice. If you grind your teeth during sleep, try to wear a night guard to protect your smile.
How Long Does It Last?
The life of your new, improved smile depends on how well you take care of them. If you take great care of them they can easily last for ten years but often they last much longer than this. Remember that the gums and the natural teeth under and around the veneers are still susceptible to decay, gum disease and other oral problems and this can shorten a veneer’s life. Making regular checkups with your dentist also guarantees they will last longer.
